Sports programmes play a vital role in the physical and mental development of individuals and create a strong bond among players and their supporters. At JAIN University, Sports isn’t merely an extracurricular activity, but a core component in the student’s education.
This year, five athletes from JAIN College have qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024. As they represent the nation, they are demonstrating the values of excellence the JAIN Institution inculcates in its students.
A pro golfer since 2001, Aditi Ashok started playing golf at the age of 5 years. She won the silver medal at the Asian Games 2023, Ladies European Tour titles and is a regular on the Ladies Professional Golf Tour (LPGA). She was the first Indian Professional Golfer to play in the Asian Youth Games in 2013, the Youth Olympic Games and Asian Games in 2014, and the Olympic Games in 2016. She first participated in the 2016 Summer Olympics held at Rio De Janeiro where she finished 41st place. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she finished a close 4th place. She currently holds the 49th place in the Women’s Golf World Ranking and 25th position in the Olympics Golf Ranking and carries the hopes of the nation to win the medal this year at the Paris Olympics.
A three-time veteran of the Olympics, the 2024 Paris Olympics is the swan song of the tennis ace, Rohan Bopanna. The World No. 4 player lost his men’s doubles opener with N Sriram Balaji after a hard fight at the games. In 2024, Bopanna became the oldest man to win the Grand Slam in the Open Era of Tennis, Australia at 43 years and 9 months age. He has had a 21-year illustrious career marked by many phenomenal victories and career highs. The Grand Old Man of Indian tennis went pro in 2003, and though he struggled in the initial years, his resilience shone through as he won two Grand Slam championships and 26 ATP Tours.
Ace swimmer Srihari Nataraj qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics under the “universality quota”. Nataraj competed in the 100 m backstroke event where he clocked 55.01 to finish second in heat 2 and 33rd overall in a field of 46. The Olympic swimmer’s best time is 53.77, which he achieved at the 2021 Sette Colli Trophy. Nataraj made his Olympic debut in the Summer Games where he finished 27th. He made his debut in 2017 at the age of 16 and won 10 medals in the National Games in 2023.
Archana Kamath is the World’s No. 103 Paddler. She started young by winning the Under-12 title in 2011 and Under 18 title at the state championships. In the next two years, she bagged 30 titles across various age categories at the Karnataka State Ranking Table Tennis Tournaments. She was the youngest player to win the U-21 national title at the age of 14 years and five months in 2014. In 2018, she won her first senior national title. She finished fourth place at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. With her teammates, Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula, Archana Girish Kamath have qualified for the women’s quarter-finals.
Tanisha Crasto has a World Badminton Ranking of No. 19 and she participated this year at the Paris Olympics with women’s doubles partner Ashwini Ponappa. She made her international debut in 2013 in Bahrain. In 2016, at the Bahrain International Challenge tournament, she partnered with Aprilsasi Putri Lejarsar Variella to win her first major BWF international title while representing Bahrain. She also became the youngest winner of the UAE Open tournament. She shifted to India in 2018 and represented Goa in Indian tournaments.
