Exploring the IB learner profile: How do we help learners make meaningful connections?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) programme is designed to provide learners with an immersive and multicultural academic experience. The learners in this programme are not only involved in rigorous academic studies but they are also encouraged to develop a global perspective that will help them thrive in an interactive economy with many participants from around the world.

The IB programme seeks to develop precise qualities in each of its learners, which are better known in the IB community as learner profiles. As an IB Diploma programme provider, we plan our pedagogy and design the academic environment to facilitate the development of the following learner profiles:

1. Inquirers

The IB programme encourages learners to ask questions rather than asking them to sit quietly, listen to a lecture and take notes. Those who developed the IB framework trust that an inquiry-led approach is the best way of learning. In order to develop this learner profile, learners often engage in open-ended discussion and have plenty of opportunities to create their own theories, test them and record the results.

2. Knowledgeable

The IB programme believes that a learner becomes knowledgeable when they apply their acquired knowledge. They learn the different tools and resources that can be used to acquire new knowledge that explore concepts, ideas, and issues that have local and global significance. In doing so, they acquire in-depth knowledge and develop understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines.

3. Thinkers

Learners in IB programme are encouraged to think critically and creatively to recognize and approach complex problems and make reasoned ethical decisions.

4. Communicators

Leaders in any industry are required to be effective communicators, so it is imperative that learners start honing their communication skills from an early age. IB helps learners in developing good communication skills. They understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language and in a variety of modes of communication. They work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others.

5. Principled

The learners of IB Programme are expected to act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups and communities. They also take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany them.

6. Open-minded

Children are born with an open mind, but educators have to work with learners to help them retain that ability to remain open and objective to the world around them. Learners who are enrolled in the IB programme are encouraged to keep a global outlook in everything they do. This helps learners understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the traditions of other individuals and communities. They are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view and are willing to grow from the experience.

7. Caring

In the IB programme, learners are not only taught but are also nurtured to become global citizens. They are trained to be caring and empathetic. They are taught to consider the needs of their community as a whole as well as the needs of the environment.

8. Risk-takers

IB learners are empowered to approach unfamiliar situations and uncertainty with courage and forethought. They are brave and articulate in defending their beliefs and will have the independence of spirit to explore new roles, ideas and strategies.

9. Balanced

The IB programme makes the learners quite balanced in their routine. They understand the importance of intellectual, physical and emotional balance to achieve personal well-being for themselves and others.

10. Reflective

In IB, the learners give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and experience. They are able to assess and understand their strength and limitations in order to support their learning and personal development.
